The 400-page report deals with the period from 2002, when the ceasefire agreement was concluded, to 2009, when the war ended.
“I am pleased to see that the final report of the Sri Lanka Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission has now been released. The report contains many important recommendations,” said Minister of the Environment and International Development Erik Solheim.
The report makes a wide range of recommendations, e.g. with regard to a political solution, power sharing, reconciliation, improving the human rights situation, strengthening the civil administration and reducing the military involvement in civilian activities.
“There are still many unanswered questions that must be clarified as regards who is responsible for the many civilian deaths in the final phase of the war. Norway urges Sri Lanka to investigate this matter fully,” said Mr Støre.
Norway also urges the Sri Lankan Government to implement the report’s recommendations.
“This is very important for the people of Sri Lanka, who have a great need for reconciliation and a political solution after so many years of war. Norway will do what it can to help ensure that the recommendations are followed up,” said Mr Solheim
